Law firm time.lex strengthens ICT practice

Brussels, 1 September 2008 – On 1 September, Edwin Jacobs became the fourth
partner in the niche law firm time.lex in Brussels. The firm celebrated its first
anniversary two months earlier and can look back on a particularly successful
first year.

Edwin Jacobs joins Prof. Jos Dumortier, Geert Somers and Hans Graux, the three
founding partners of time.lex. The firm already has a strong reputation on the market as
a specialist in IT law. The arrival of Jacobs will strengthen its expertise in service level
agreements, outsourcing and other ICT contracts, e-banking, electronic invoicing,
software, databanks, e-business and the Internet, information security, digital archiving,
privacy, copyrights and trademarks.

More ICT knowledge from experience
Edwin Jacobs was previously head of legal services at ISABEL, a leading service provider
in e-banking, e-business (i.a., electronic invoicing) and e-government. He later used his
thorough business ICT knowledge as a manager for the ICT practice group at Monard-
D’Hulst in Brussels.

Jacobs was the founder and chairman of the “IT/IP law practice group” at the Institute of
Company Lawyers. He is also an affiliate researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for
Law and ICT (ICRI) at the K.U. Leuven and a recognized mediator in civil and commercial
affairs.

A keen eye on technology
time.lex was founded in July 2007 by the three lawyers from the IT law department at
Lawfort. The Brussels niche law firm specialises in telecommunication, IT/IP, media and
e-business.

In little over a year, time.lex established itself as a key player in IT law with a special
emphasis on privacy protection, ICT contracts, maintaining intellectual property rights in
an electronic context and liability management. Edwin Jacobs will in particular bring a
great deal of know-how to the firm in the field of outsourcing, e-banking and electronic
invoicing.

Specialists on a European level
The clear focus and its pool of specialists allow the team to understand and anticipate the
real needs of the ICT market: wide expertise, concrete and practical solutions and
knowledge that is always up-to-date. A niche law firm also works more efficiently and
with a smaller overhead than a traditionally organised international firm. Clients thus also
benefit from specialised and practice-oriented services at fees that are affordable
compared to large international firms.

This team of specialised lawyers with academic credentials puts time.lex in a unique
position in areas requiring a great deal of specialist knowledge: electronic signatures,
content management, e-health and open source development. This allows time.lex to
lend strategic and operational legal support to national and international clients, including
start-ups, multinationals and government services from the local to the European level. A
network of foreign specialist correspondents also gives time.lex access to local expertise
throughout Europe.
